How conversions work
Each unit is defined relative to a base — meters for length, kilograms for mass, and Celsius for temperature. The tool converts your value into that base and then out to the unit you chose, which keeps every pairing consistent.
Temperature is a little different: because scales like Fahrenheit and Celsius don't share a zero point, the conversion shifts as well as scales. Length and mass are simple proportional factors.
A worked example
To convert 10 kilometers to miles, the tool takes the value to the base unit and back: 10 km is 10,000 meters, and 10,000 ÷ 1,609.344 ≈ 6.21 miles. Temperature works differently — 100°C to Fahrenheit is 100 × 9/5 + 32 = 212°F, the boiling point of water — because the scales have different zero points, not just different step sizes.
Everyday conversions worth memorizing
A handful of rough equivalences cover most daily needs: a mile is about 1.6 km, a kilogram is about 2.2 pounds, an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, and a liter is a bit over a quart. For temperature, 0°C is 32°F (freezing) and a comfortable 20°C is 68°F.
The calculator is precise when you need it, but these approximations are enough to sanity-check a number on the fly — useful when a recipe, a road sign, or a weather app is in the “wrong” units.
